A 23-year-old female, 12 days postpartum, was hospitalized due to acute urinary retention. The patient presented with a complete inability to void.
Medical History
- Gravida 2.
- Para 2.
- First delivery (18 months prior): Prolonged labor culminating in vacuum-assisted vaginal delivery.
- Second delivery (recent): Rapid progression with epidural analgesia.
- Postpartum course complicated by constipation leading to urinary retention.
Clinical Presentation
The patient presented with acute urinary retention in the postpartum period. The condition developed following constipation in the immediate post-delivery period.
Treatment
Acupuncture treatment was administered utilizing the following points bilaterally:
- 77.17 Tiang Huang, 77.19 Di Huang, 77.21 Ren Huang.
- 66.03 Huo Ying, 66.04 Huo Zhu.
- LIV-1 Da Dun.
- KID-7 Fu Liu, KID-10 Yin Gu.
- BL-60 Kun Lun, BL-67 Zhi Yin.
Treatment duration was limited to 30 minutes due to scheduled diagnostic imaging.
Diagnostic Findings
Ultrasonography confirmed bladder distension, validating the clinical diagnosis of urinary retention.
Outcome:
The symptoms were resolved within one hour of treatment, with the patient regaining spontaneous micturition ability and completely emptying the bladder.
