Chief Complaint
Tibial stress syndrome with pain concentrated in the lower aspect of both legs, specifically along the medial and lateral areas of the tibia.
Shin splints, or Tibial stress syndrome, refer to pain along the inner edge of the shinbone (tibia). This condition is often caused by repetitive stress or overuse of the lower leg muscles, tendons, and tibia. It is common among athletes, particularly runners, dancers, and military personnel, who frequently engage in activities involving repetitive, high-impact motions.
Shin splints typically present as tenderness, soreness, or pain along the inner part of the shin and can worsen with physical activity.
Age: 18
Palm Diagnosis: Lung
Treatment
I used local points with Master Tung’s Points.
Local Acupuncture: Needling close to the painful areas near the tibia.
Points Used:
11.22 Fu Yuan Recovery
Root Treatment: 88.17 Sima Zhong
Discussion
Local needles were inserted near the tibia. After insertion, they were rotated in one direction until they engaged the connective tissue. This technique stresses the connective tissue, promoting healing of the periosteum (the bone covering). The points were needled bilaterally.
11.22 Fu Yuan
Indications
- Swollen bones (osteoarthritis)
- Periostitis, osteomyelitis, and connective tissue inflammation
- Arthritis and tendon pain
- Bone spurs in the spine
- Sciatica and lower back pain
- Steaming bone syndrome
These acupuncture points are located on the fourth finger, which corresponds to the liver, while the fifth finger represents the kidneys. As a result, the innervation of the points is the kidneys and liver. The kidneys govern the bones, while the liver governs the tendons and ligaments. Therefore, these points can effectively treat tendon and bone disorders, especially when accompanied by pain.
Root Treatment
Point 88.17, known as Sima Zhong, is primarily used to treat the lungs. I utilized this point to address the root of the issue.
